LPA registration fees to rise in November 2025
LPA registration fees to rise in November 2025

22 August 2025

The Ministry of Justice has announced that, subject to parliamentary approval, the application fees for registering a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) will increase later this year.

From 17 November 2025, the fee will rise from £82 to £92 per application. This means that anyone applying to register an LPA with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) on or after that date will need to pay the new fees.

The Importance of an LPA

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you lose the ability to do so yourself.

LPAs are important because they ensure your wishes are respected and provide clarity and reassurance for both you and your loved ones. They can cover decisions about your health and welfare, as well as your property and financial affairs.

Why are fees increasing?

The government has explained that the change is designed to ensure that the cost of processing LPA applications more closely reflects the cost of delivering the service. LPA fees are reviewed in line with His Majesty’s Treasury guidance, Managing Public Money.

Exemptions and remissions

Applicants may not always have to pay the full fee. Depending on financial circumstances, individuals may be entitled to:

  • An exemption – where no fee is payable, or
  • A remission – where the fee is reduced.

More details about the exemption and remission scheme can be found on the government’s website.

Planning ahead

If you are considering making an LPA, it may be advisable to start the process before the fee increase comes into effect. An LPA helps protect your wishes and gives someone you trust the authority to act on your behalf.

At Phillips Law, we regularly advise clients on preparing and registering LPAs, helping them to put the right arrangements in place for the future.
