Phillips Law is delighted to have acted for Spinach Restaurant on its acquisition of a new restaurant in Crystal Palace.

The transaction, which completed in January 2023, was led by Legal Director Clare Strachan with assistance from trainee solicitor Nadhia Ahmed.

Spinach is independently owned by business owner Melissa Harwood. Its first restaurant opened six years ago on Lordship Lane in East Dulwich and is winner of the Southwark business of the year and reviewed by Michael Deacon, Telegraph.

After the loss of a second restaurant site due to crippling rent increases, the Spinach team and their customers and suppliers were successful in a crowdfunding campaign that raised £6k and turned a negative into a positive as Melissa found the replacement Crystal Palace site.

Three short months later Spinach Crystal Palace opened its doors and Phillips Law worked hard with Melissa to a tight deadline to ensure Spinach could start trading as soon as possible.

Melissa, founder of Spinach said, “At a time when we had to make quick decisions, it was extremely reassuring to have the pragmatic and sound advice of Phillips Law. Clare guided us efficiently through every step of the transaction, simplified the legal terminology and was a pleasure to work with.”

Clare Strachan, Legal Director at Phillips Law said, We were delighted to work with Mel and the Spinach team on their new acquisition. The last couple of years have been incredibly challenging for the hospitality industry. We see this as a positive sign for the sector and for independently run businesses like Spinach in the wake of the pandemic. It was a pleasure working with Mel and her team; we look forward to working together again and encourage everyone to visit Spinach when they’re in town.”
