Purpose of the Role
The Legal Cashier plays a key role in ensuring the accurate and compliant financial management of the firm’s client and office accounts. This role involves maintaining financial records in accordance with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Accounts Rules, processing daily transactions, and supporting the Finance Team with reconciliations, reporting, and month-end processes.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Processing & Compliance
- Manage all client and office account transactions in accordance with SRA Accounts Rules.
- Post incoming and outgoing payments promptly and accurately.
- Reconcile client bank account daily and investigate discrepancies.
- Monitor client ledger balances and ensure funds are dealt with appropriately.
- Check & approve sales invoices & completion statements.
- Ensure VAT is recorded and applied correctly in line with HMRC requirements.
- Processing daily client to office transfers.
- Processing of banking of cheques.
Cash Flow & Banking
- Prepare and process bank payments, CHAPS, and BACS transfers.
- Record and reconcile deposits, cheques, and online payments.
Reporting & Month-End
- Assist with audit preparation and respond to auditor queries.
- Maintain accurate and complete records for internal and regulatory reporting.
Team & Collaboration
- Work closely with fee earners and support staff to ensure compliance and accuracy.
- Provide guidance to staff on financial procedures and SRA rules when required.
- Contribute to improving processes, controls, and reporting within the Finance Team.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Proven experience as a Legal Cashier or in a similar finance role within a law firm.
- Strong understanding of SRA Accounts Rules and legal accounting principles.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong IT skills, particularly in legal accounting software (e.g., LEAP, Xero, or similar) and Excel.
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
Desirable
- ILFM qualification or equivalent finance certification.
