Exploring legal careers and inspiring future solicitors
Last week, Phillips Law welcomed a group of Year 10 students from Testbourne School to our offices, providing them with insights into careers in law and the legal profession. This visit formed part of our ongoing work with local schools to help young people understand the opportunities available within the legal sector.
Understanding Legal Career Paths
During the visit, our team shared their experiences of different routes into the legal profession. Students learned about the various pathways to becoming a solicitor, including traditional law degrees followed by the Legal Practice Course, the newer Solicitors Qualifying Examination route, and alternative paths through apprenticeships and conversion courses. Some of our team also discussed how they had moved into law from other professions.
The students heard about the day-to-day realities of working in a law firm and how legal careers can span multiple practice areas, including corporate law, commercial law, employment law, and dispute resolution. Our solicitors explained their own career journeys and the different specialisms they had developed over time.

The Importance of Legal Education and Career Guidance
Many students have limited exposure to the legal profession beyond what they see in popular media, which often doesn’t reflect the reality of legal practice. School visits like this provide an opportunity to give young people more accurate information about what a career in the law actually involves.
Our team discussed the skills and qualifications needed for legal careers and addressed some common misconceptions about working in law. The students were able to ask questions about the challenges and rewards of the profession and consider whether a career as a solicitor might suit them.
Inspiring Future Legal Professionals
As Fiona from our team explained to the students:
“By taking time to share our varied routes into law and of working in a law firm, we hope to inspire the next generation to understand how being a lawyer can be a rewarding and interesting career. The young adults of today are essential to the future of our legal system and society. They will be the advocates, leaders, and changemakers who shape our laws, defend our rights, and uphold the values that define a democratic and just society.”
Phillips Law’s Community Work
This visit to Testbourne School reflects Phillips Law’s work with local schools and educational institutions. We believe that law firms can contribute to their local communities by helping young people understand the career opportunities available to them.
Our team was pleased to share insights with these students and hope that some of them will be inspired to pursue careers in law. Legal careers offer opportunities for intellectual challenge, professional development, and the chance to contribute to society.
